Spring Science Diplomacy Course at NYU

Check out the Science Diplomacy course for the Spring Semester at NYU. It was supposed to kick off today, February 9th at 6PM, but unfortunately, weather has led to a cancellation of tonight's talk.

Register for the class here.

The first talk was supposed to be "Bringing Cancer Research to the Developing World" with Nobel Laureate Dr. Harold Varmus, co-sponsored by the NYU Leadership Initiative, NYU Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, and NYU STEP. However, due to inclement weather, tonight's event is cancelled. We hope to have it rescheduled for a later date.

For the course syllabus, read on.

Syllabus for Science Diplomacy: The Role of Science in International Relations and Global Development

Course Director: Christine Ponder, PhD, Director, NYU Office of Postdoctoral Affairs
Organizers: Brent Wells PhD and Ursula Koniges
Thursday 6 pm -7:30 pm
February 9th to March 30st
NYU Silver Building 31 Washington Place, Room 1003

This course will introduce the role of scientists, science, and technology in international diplomatic affairs. A series of science diplomacy experts will provide a framework of science diplomacy, its various sectors, participating agencies, challenges, its future and potential for action. Participants will gain an understanding of the skills (analytical, ethical) to apply science in a diplomatic/international framework through a group-based case study. The course will emphasize four primary themes: science diplomacy through government, science diplomacy through academia, science diplomacy through institutions, and science diplomacy through media.

Assignment: With a small group (2-4), identify a diplomacy issue in which science plays a significant role and write a memo that identifies a need or problem and suggests how scientists could address the issue. The memo should be no more than 2 pages. Due 3/30/17
